Best floor plans for the ultimate in entertaining

by Jeremy Richards

Summer is coming and that means thoughts drift towards BBQs, backyard cricket and a few drinks with friends as the evening slips into night. From sunny days to lazy nights staring at the stars having friends over is a much-loved part of having a house that is geared towards entertaining.

Good indoor/outdoor flow, a kitchen that can handle preparing nibbles and a deck area that suits a whole bunch of seats (and maybe a fire pit) ticks all the boxes. In this article we select a few Genius Homes designs that deliver the above in spades.

Whereas it would be easy to choose all of the larger homes and simply show them off as being excellent for entertaining we're going to choose one or two designs from each of our bedroom sizes. Starting with our 2 bedroom homes and going all the way up to our 5 bedroom house design.

2 bedroom homes

In this category there are two designs that stand out as having great entertaining potential.

Lincoln

2 Bed - Lincoln

Lincoln - Floor Plan

The Lincoln ticks a few boxes that make it a great home for entertaining. One is the large open-plan living and dining area. Here the kitchen creates a great social hub as the 'U' shape lends itself to a breakfast bar, which can become a second social space if the conversation in the living room gets boring! The sliding doors onto the deck certainly help offer good indoor/outdoor flow the size of the deck means you won't have everyone leave the house.

Pukaki

2 Bed - Pukaki

Pukaki 2 - Floor Plan-1

The Pukaki focusses a little more on having a deck space that can be accessed from the lounge and the dining area. This is practical, especially if a BBQ were to be placed in the little dip behind the wood burner. The kitchen also has a breakfast island which is great for break-out conversations. The fact the social space in this house runs the full length means people can spread out without isolating themselves from the fun.

Benmore

3 Bed - Benmore

Benmore - Floor Plan

The Benmore offers a lot for the entertainer. From a large living, dining and kitchen area to spacious deck area this home offers everything the previous two feature with one slightly hidden benefit.

Whereas the other two designs have a more traditional deck layout this one offers a sun trap with the sheltered deck between the two wings of the living area and bedroom space. This can offer excellent wind protection and a warm area for relaxed drinks.

Aoraki

3 Bed - Aoraki

Aoraki - Floor Plan

This home offers a slightly different entertaining style. Yes, it offers a large open-plan living, dining and kitchen area but the wrap-around deck offers another level of entertaining benefits. With sliding doors out from the living area, and double doors onto the side, this can encourage two areas for outdoor entertaining. Whether hiding from the wind or using two spaces to have two different group chats the division can serve multiple benefits. However, if you simply need one large area for everyone to hang out together then the deck from the living area offers more than enough space.

Rakaia 4

4 Bed - Rakaia 4

Rakaia 4 - Floor Plan

The rakes ceiling in the open-plan living area adds to the sense of space in this home and the large open-plan design means there's plenty of space for entertaining. This house design builds on the theme of the Aoraki, and the large deck wraps around two sides of this home. Access from the living and dining area means guests will not struggle to find an area to socialise.

Lindis 4

4 Bed - Lindis

Lindis 4 - Floor Plan

The Lindis 4 features a large open-plan lounge and dining area but with a twist. The kitchen lies at the centre of this home, automatically making the kitchen the heart of this home. Add to that the sliding doors from the lounge, kitchen and dining room and the full-length verandah becomes one of the most accessible spots in this design. And what about that verandah? Offering a sheltered outside space during rain and shine this is the ultimate way to have an indoor/outdoor flow, without limiting yourself to great weather.

5 bedroom homes

Nova

Large Homes - Nova (1)-1

Nova - Floor Plan (1)

The Nova is our largest floor plan. Featuring 5 bedrooms, 3 of which have ensuite bathrooms. From an entertaining perspective, the wrap-around deck offers plenty of space for socialising. When the weather's bad the second living area creates a natural cosy spot for entertaining, while the largest living room is a natural spot for socialising.

No matter which house design you fall in love with there are plenty of ways to make it an entertainer's paradise. Rain or shine your dream home can be the perfect place to entertain. Good friends, great conversation all result in good times. A Genius Homes house design is just the beginning of decades of memories.
